Nosebleed Studio

Nosebleed Studio is a Swedish manga studio that first saw daylight in February 2006. It was founded by Natalia Batista, Alice Engström, Catarina Batista, Chi Minh Quan and Jonathan J Holm, with the premise 'Manga for the people'. That first year, we launched a website and made our first publication - Nosebleed Studio #1 2006.

Since then, we have been hard working, producing fanzines and books both together and individually, selling them at conventions and events thoughout Sweden, Denmark and Finland. To see more of the things we have been working on, check out projects or read some of our manga.

The studio works as a platform for us to together promote each other with and do projects together within. But we still work most our times individually, fighting for our dreams to be able to work full time as artists. Sadly, Chi Minh and Jonathan decided to leave because of inactivity, but the remaining is still going strong.

NBS-anthology In 2011, we decided to take Nosebleed Studio to the next level, launching a new homepage and releasing our 5 years jubilee anthology, that will be for sale on this website soon. It contains brand new mangas and art by us three girls that have been roeing this boat for all these years. Make sure to be back soon to get yourself a copy!
We also took the chance to welcome a new crew member on board - Joakim Waller. Read more about him here below and you can find his mangas and art in our gallery.

Thank you for checking out our website and we hope you'll have an enjoyable time here!

Natalia Batista

My name is Natalia and I'm a manga artist, illustrator and comic art teacher.
I've never stopped drawing since I was little, and when I was about 14 years old, I understood I wanted to draw and tell stories. When I finally finnished secondary high school, I studied comic art at Serieskolan (Comic Art School) in Malmö 2005-2007.
When I got my first published comic Lova in Okej magazine (a Swedish music magazine for teens) in 2006, I started my path to my dream: to one day earn a living on drawing manga and telling stories.

During my time at Serieskolan, my comics Prinsessan och fröken Näktergal (The Princess and Miss Nightingale) and Synth Master J got among the 10 finalists in the Swedish manga competition Mangatalangen 2006 and 2007.
At that time, I also worked as a comic art teacher at libraries, art galleries and schools, and also as the teacher for the summer course at Serieskolan in Malmö 2007-2009.

In spring 2009 I self publiched my own manga book A Song For Elise and sold it at fairs and conventions in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. It was a great lesson in book production!
I also worked as comic art teacher at the course Klimatserier! (Climate comics) in Malmö, while working on the comic magazine Klimatpimpa din livsstil (Climate pimp your lifestyle), a commission by the Enviromental Department of Malmö City. It got published in January 2010 and spread in 4000 copies to Malmö's schools and their pupils.

In spring 2010, my childrens manga Mjau! got published by Kabusa Böcker. It is a 4-book series about two kittens (portrayed as children) playing around, going on picnic, hunting ghosts and getting new friends. I finally debuted in the Swedish comic scene, and as one of few manga artist, which is both fun and a bit sad.

In fall 2010, my manga "A Song For Elise" got translated into German and published by Tokyopop, under the title Ein Lied für Elise. Yippie!!
At that time I was illustrating the Swedish children books series Häxfolket by Jo Salmson, published by Bonnier Carlsen. First of four books is out in March 2011. Very interesting and learning experience!

Alice Engström

Alice has been drawing since she could hold a pen but got in to the amazing world of manga and anime when she saw my neighbor Totoro on tv as a kid. Alice is mostly known for her popular How to draw shoujo course in the swedish manga magazine Shojo stars. She is also the creator of the ongoing strip manga Innekatterna for the magazine Kattliv since 2008, and the official Silver fang DVD-covers in Sweden and Finland. For the moment Alice is working on her first autobiographic manga August in June to be released by Galago in 2012, and a upcoming online manga about a girl who wants to become a famous blogger no matter what together with the the columnist and blog-profile Leone Milton. Alice has through the years been published in Sydsvenskan, Shojo Stars, Manga mania, Manganackan, Bild & Bubbla, Metro and Kattliv to mention some.

Catarina Batista

Creator of Mia Min Mia, published in Sydsvenskan 2010 (Swedish newspaper). Teacher at the summer course at Serieskolan (Comic Art School) in Malmö. Teaches manga at schools and libraries. Has been published in Shojo Stars, Manga Mania, Mangatalangen 2006, Swedish Comic Sin, Swedish Comic Sin 2, Comic Party, Tivoli and creator of the official Spelens Hus (House of the Games) in Malmö logo. Is working on her portfolio and looking for commissions for illustration and commercial work, while studying and making more manga. After finishing my second year at Serieskolan (Comic Art School) this spring, I will work as a teacher at the summer course at the school. Later, I look forward to kick start my career as an illustrator for real this fall, while probably studying. I’m also working on my online portfolio and planing future manga projects.

Joakim Waller

Nosebleed Studios newest recruit (joined December 2010). I like to draw above anything else, presumably high-speed action comics in Japanese manga style. I got published for the first time in 2007 when my comic “I Väntan På Tåget Mot Kokojone” made it third in the Swedish manga competition Mangatalangen. Ever since I have been trying to make my manga more and more interesting. I entered Serieskolan (Comic Art School) in Malmö 2009-2010.
